  • Previous care experience NHS or similar social care equivalent
  • NVQ level 3 or experiential learning experience/ competency to a similar level.
  • Experience of working well within a team.
  • An ability to organise own caseload.
  • Experience of working under in- direct supervision

Description

As a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, you will manage a  caseload of patients with complex communication and swallowing difficulties requiring neurorehabilitation, often related to major trauma, neurosurgery, or complex neurological conditions, and including tracheostomy. Key responsibilities include:

  • Clinical Management: Conduct advanced assessments and treatments for severe communication and swallowing disorders.
  • Assessment & Diagnosis: Use various formal and informal methods to diagnose and analyse the severity of speech, language, and swallowing impairments.
  • Intervention & Care Planning: Provide expert clinical advice, develop individualised care plans, and implement highly specialised therapy programs.
  • Risk Management: Ensure safety during therapy sessions, managing clinical risks.
  • Specialist Referrals & Examinations: Refer and participate in Videofluoroscopy (VFS) and FEES assessments, with support to achieve competency.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Actively engage in ward meetings, case conferences, and work closely with other teams.
  • Liaison & Coordination: Ensure smooth patient transitions between services and agencies.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records and provide clear, accessible reports.
  • Leadership & Decision-Making, with excellent communication and conflict management abilities. Supervision for less experienced SLTs and informally across MDT.
  • Strong Organisational Skills for caseload management and documentation.
