Severn Pathology, based at Southmead Hospital, aims to provide a best in class, high quality, innovative, value for money pathology service that serves the needs of the healthcare market in the South-West region. The multi-million pound, four storey building houses NBT’s cellular pathology, neuropathology, genetics and microbiology services and is part of the Science Quarter, which brings together NBT, UK Health Security Agency and the University of Bristol.
We also host dedicated dispensary and clinical pharmacy teams in our award-winning Brunel Building, optimising the use of medication to promote the health, wellness and disease prevention of patients.
The Pharmacy Department is committed to providing a high-quality clinical service and improving patient safety through standard and innovative practices that support our working patterns and our Trust’s objectives. The laboratory within our Severn Pathology building accommodates all pathology disciplines including the Blood Sciences, Bristol Genetics Laboratory, a single Bristol Cellular Pathology Service and a combined Microbiology and Health Protection Agency service within one facility. We process samples sent from local GP Practices and hospitals, including Southmead Hospital, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust.
Our Pathology team work with colleagues to test more than 1 million samples per year in the labs at Southmead Hospital and it is estimated that pathology investigations are involved in 70-80% of all healthcare decisions about diagnosis and treatment.

The primary emphasis of this role is to independently perform a variety of Cardiac Investigations both non-invasive and invasive with a focus on echocardiography. Our department performs a range of invasive and non-invasive tests.
For newly qualified Cardiac Physiologists, we can offer a tailored personal development programme.
Our Cardiac Physiologists provide highly specialist advice and training to both physiologists and other health care professionals within the multi-disciplinary team.
Additional roles within our Healthcare Science Teams include:
up to 3 permanent post available
25 hours per week to include 5 shifts per week Monday to Friday (4 Monday to Friday when on weekend rotation), every other weekend and rotational bank holidays.
Hours are as follows:
Saturday and Sunday (and bank holidays) = 07.00 - 11.00
Weekday shifts = 07.00 - 12.00, 08.00 - 13.00 and 12.00 until 17.00 if covering late clinics.
Duties will include blood sampling for patients on all acute wards, medical, surgical and high risk infection departments.
Also providing a service to the very busy and demanding blood sampling room, for patients attending clinics of varying specialities.
NICU, fistula and vascular training will also be provided.
Previous phlebotomy experience is preferred but all applicants will be considered.
Successful candidates will receive full up to date training and take a practical assessment to assess skill level.
Shortlisted applicants will be expected to complete and pass an assessment of basic numeracy and literacy prior to interview.
Candidates with previous experience will have to demonstrate their skill in a practical test.
This position will commence at Band 2, progressing to Band 3 after a minimum period of 6 months and on successful completion of further training and competencies, this can vary on time scale.

As part of Blood Sciences at North Bristol the Department of Immunology and Immunogenetics provides a comprehensive clinical diagnostic service to the North Bristol NHS Trust and local community, The department is committed to providing a high quality service for all its users and is a UKAS accredited medical laboratory. In NHSBT you will be supporting established and partner laboratories and providing clinical advise and strategic direction to NHSBT in all areas of H&I, including travel to NHSBT sites.
To be part of the GI Team in Histology, participating in dissection and reporting of GI cases, training BMS staff and participation in MDTs
As part of the busy Cellular Pathology service you will be involved in a range of tasks in addition to the collation of meetings including data-entry, maintaining slide filing and general office duties.
Applicants are required to work as part of a team to provide a broad range of technical support under the supervision of senior technical staff. The work is varied and includes sample processing (including histological specimens), data entry and Genetic technical processing such as PCR (manual and automated) as well as some basic genetic analysis. The main attribute required is a conscientious and careful approach to technical work.
· To be responsible for the management of homecare staff and day to day workload management.
· To be responsible for ensuring all 5500+ homecare patients receive their correct medications in line with the prescription requirements.
· To lead on service level review meetings and ensure these are held for all therapy areas currently using homecare.
· Manage areas of poor performance and escalate to the Homecare Services Manager and the regional homecare group any ongoing issues or areas of risk.
· To investigate patient or staff led complaints involving or relating to homecare services developing and implementing necessary changes in practice to ensure improvement.
· To lead in the implementation of new homecare services.
· To co-ordinate the homecare work process in accordance with Standard Operating procedures, safe working systems and the legal framework for the supply of medicines.
· To manage the building of relevant CMM Templates
· Represent NBT at Regional Homecare Meetings and support the development of collaborative contracting for all homecare services
· Develop and implement new innovative ways of working, for example support electronic prescribing in the Homecare setting and Electronic Invoicing
Work rotationally in specified areas of the department
Participate in the reception, preparation and documentation of specimens for examination material in accordance with laboratory policies and protocols
Participate in the sectioning of fresh frozen tissue and smears
Participate in the entry of data to laboratory computer systems
Participate in specimen processing and the production of histology sections for microscopic examination.
Prepare and maintain stocks of staining solutions and reagents

Be responsible for the clinical and specialist technical assessment, prescription and provision of specialist equipment.
Apply mechanical engineering, bioengineering and technological principles to assess and provide specialist clinical engineering solutions for the clinical, functional and environmental requirements of disabled adult and paediatric patients who use manual wheelchairs, indoor and indoor / outdoor powered wheelchairs and special postural management systems.
Undertake independent assessments and multi-disciplinary assessments of patients within their own environments or at clinics based at BCE.
As part of the multi-disciplinary team, assess patients for bespoke moulded seating. Assume the responsibility for interfacing the moulded seat onto the patient’s wheelchair and ensuring the combined equipment is safe for its intended purpose.
Design, draw and provide clear written instructions for the production, manufacture and clinical fitting of custom made adaptations to wheelchairs, special seating systems and associated equipment to meet the intended clinical and technical requirements of individual patients.
