Healthwatch speaks to NBT patients about communication while on elective waiting lists

We asked Healthwatch to find out how we can support people on waiting lists for elective surgery and surgical investigations, with a focus on marginalised and seldom-heard communities.

We wanted to know what's working well and what needs improvement, particularly for patients who have been waiting longer than six months.

We especially wanted to hear from patients whose experience may be disproportionately impacted by healthcare inequality. We identified patient cohorts who are marginalised or seldom heard.

This included patients who were living in the most deprived areas of Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, and people with protected characteristics including disability, ethnicity, age, neurodiversity, or people with additional communication needs.

Responses were gathered from 45 people using an online survey, telephone interviews, and focus group discussion.

What did patients tell us they wanted?

Maria Kane, Joint Chief Executive of North Bristol NHS Trust and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, said:

"We were keen to understand the experience of our patients waiting for surgery and reached out to Healthwatch to help us with this work.

Healthwatch's report has provided valuable insights about how we can better inform and support patients during the time from referral to receiving their treatment.

The findings have highlighted specific improvement actions that will make a meaningful impact for patients. We are pleased to report that work is already underway against several of the recommendations made in this report, including contacting patients every three months while they are awaiting inpatient procedures."

Vicky Marriott, Chief Officer for Healthwatch Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, said:

"We were delighted that North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) commissioned us once again and today we publish this report into people's experiences of communication while they're on a waiting list for surgery. NBT have acted on the findings and committed to prioritising work that will reduce health inequalities, which includes a screening questionnaire to help patients develop a personalised plan before their operation.

"We applaud our acute trust for valuing the insights from patients. We don't believe the inequity found in this report is deliberate, but it is brave to take steps towards understanding the issues for people and find ways to improve care for all."
