North Bristol NHS Trust sets out plans to improve diversity and increase employment opportunities

We have launched an innovative plan to improve diversity in its workforce, and increase the number of staff employed from the most socio-economically challenged communities in and around Bristol.  

As one of the largest employers in the area, NBT runs NHS services at Southmead Hospital, Bristol Centre for Enablement, Cossham, and in the community, and has set an ambitious goal of employing 38.5% of its workforce from Bristol’s most socio-economically challenged communities by March 2025. 

We kicked off our 'Commitment to Our Community’ plan with a launch event at Southmead Hospital last week, attended by our staff and local community partners. The event was a statement of unity and purpose, highlighting the intention to make deeper connections within the local community and generate enthusiasm about the impact of the plan.  

As part of the plan, the Trust is working to improve opportunities for jobseekers from under-represented groups through a community mentoring scheme, and a new Careers Hub at Southmead Hospital. In addition to this, the Trust will also be working with local schools, colleges and community groups to support local people into employment and apprenticeship opportunities. This plan will also identify and implement ways of reducing the disparity that currently exists in the appointment of people from ethnic minority backgrounds compared to white candidates, with a goal of reducing the Trust’s disparity ratio to 1.25 by the end of March 2025. 

Maria Kane, Chief Executive at North Bristol NHS Trust, said: "We are committed to increasing employment opportunities for those who live locally, especially within ethnically diverse groups and areas impacted by socio-economic disadvantage. We want to make a real difference in our local communities, ensuring an outstanding experience for all staff and patients." 

Sarah Margetts, NBT’s Deputy Chief People Officer, added: "This plan is more than just a recruitment drive. It is about opening doors and building bridges. We are committed to providing meaningful pathways for those who need them most. By collaborating with local schools, colleges, charities, and community groups, we aim to build a workforce that truly reflects our community." 

Among the plans in place to achieve these goals are setting clear and accessible career paths for local talent, and reviewing recruitment policies and practices to ensure they are as equitable as possible.

By playing our part to support our local employment opportunities, we can enhance cultural understanding and build trust. This initiative will benefit both NBT and the local area, contributing to economic stability and growth as well as helping us to deliver our aim of outstanding patient experience."
