Every year we recognise and celebrate individuals and teams across our Trust who have been nominated by their colleagues for making a real difference to others.
The April awards saw 14 winners from across NBT be celebrated for their achievements alongside their fellow heroes.
This month heroes were commended for the way they have truly put our new NBT Cares values into action. Whether that’s going above and beyond their role to bring positive change, providing truly patient centered care or supporting others in difficult times.
At the awards, Assistant Director of Informatics - Business Intelligence and Chief Information Officer, David Hale, shared just how important it is to have these awards and gave a heartfelt thank you to all of this month's winners.
Find out why our Heroes were nominated below:
Shelley Jordan, Matron - nominated by Jelourd Lindero, Charge Nurse
Shelley has been a great leader, support, and inspiration to all of us here in Centralised Outpatients. We were thrilled when she became our matron. Shelley covers IR, Endoscopy, Radiology and Centralised Outpatients. Shelley never closed her doors from us and always welcomed her into her office when we needed support. She is the only Matron I have seen that worked in the clinics as an HCA, a staff nurse, a ward sister at times we are in need. This is very inspirational and so humbling. Furthermore, she embodies the NBT Core Values which we should all have- we are proud to work alongside her!
Julia Coleman, Healthcare Support Worker – nominated by Jelourd Lindero, Charge Nurse
Julia has been working in the trust for almost 40 years now. She has been a valued member of our gate 5 nursing team. Additionally, she has delivered exceptional service to the renal team through compassion for patients and fellow members of staff, professionalism in nursing care, and she has demonstrated leadership in the absence of our registered staff. We are very proud of her, as she is retiring this upcoming 2025, we are honoured to be working with this individual and as her charge nurse, it has been a pleasure and a very humbling experience working with her.
Isobel Downes, Sister – nominated by Lucy Callard, RN
Isobel joined our team as a newly qualified nurse in 2023 and soon became a highly thought of member of the team. She is proactive, keen to learn, good at communicating and teamwork, whilst always concentrating on the Nursing 6 C's. She is often given more responsibility than others as newly qualified as her, being in charge of a busy admissions unit and handling the complex circumstances that come with this role with maturity and readiness to learn. Izzy is highly respected by her colleagues, being mentioned in nearly all one-to-ones as a great teammate, who is approachable, helpful, and good at teaching. Always happy, she is a big contributor to moral. Additionally, she is an excellent mentor to students on the ward offering them a great experience. Izzy has a lot to contended with out of work and is one of the main careers/supporters to her parents who are facing multiple complex challenges, yet she never lets her home life affect her work. She leaves it at the door and provides patients with the most outstanding care. Izzy will always be the nurse you would want to look after your family, often receiving cards of gratitude or being mentioned in patient feedback for the compassion she has provided. Izzy is an asset to not only 32B, but the hospital and we believe this should be recognized.
Myrna-Pamela Daniels, Catering Assistant – nominated by Lisa Haines, Matron
Myrna is the face of the coffee shop within the Vu restaurant. She serves us coffee with a smile on her face. Always with lovely conversation enquiring about your day. Nothing is too much trouble. She is hard working and committed to ensuring she gives you the best service. There is often a queue in the shop and she is always rushing around but this doesn't deter her from always giving her best and making you the best coffee! She deserves the recognition.
Gillian Tanner, Nurse – nominated by Shelly George, HCA
Gill sounds like an incredible role model! Her dedication to patient and family-centered care, combined with her commitment to using a bicycle for transport for 20 years, speaks volumes about her values of resilience, health, and sustainability. The NHS has seen many changes over the years, advancements in technology, shifts in healthcare policy, and new treatment methods, but nurses like Gill have remained constant pillars in the system, ensuring that patients receive high-quality care. Gill working for 50 years in the NHS (National Health Service) is an incredible milestone that reflects dedication, hard work, and a lifelong commitment to healthcare. Well done Gill.
Christine Sluman, Lead Antimicrobial Pharmacist – nominated by Isabel Baker, Consultant Microbiologist and Roshina Gnanadurai, Consultant in Microbiology & Infectious Diseases
Christine is single handed in her role as an antimicrobial pharmacist in our trust (and this is only part of her overall role). She works incredibly hard to ensure that we have a stewardship programme at NBT, reviewing patients, attending meetings, writing reports, conducting audits. She is extremely supportive to clinical teams, is always friendly, and has a smile on her face, even when she is juggling multiple priorities. Her efforts and positive can do attitude are invaluable, and she is an excellent team player.
Christine is the only antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist for the trust which is only part of her role. Given the lack of resource provided to this part of her role, Christine goes above and beyond to ensure that antimicrobial stewardship is done as well as possible on the wards. The microbiology department has recently started trialing twice a week antimicrobial stewardship ward round on MAU/SAU, once a week antiviral stewardship ward round and a weekly ward round which Christine has organized, collated data and been an integral part of, including feeding back education to teams for learning. As part of the change to gentamicin prescribing and the fact that results are released automatically to team, In the initial 3 months of the change, Christine spent significant time looking at all patients with a high levels to aid clinical teams regarding whether it was appropriate to continue and advice if so and if microbiology should be consulted for alternative agent if not safe to proceed. She has also been part for the ASM team trying to align our antimicrobial guidance with UHBW and engage with EPMA with the large amount of work regarding uploading antimicrobial, antivirals, antifungal, with consideration for hard or soft or no stop dates, flags to ward safety measure, indication etc. This is just one portion of her job and I think all her colleagues feel that she is a true gem and massively appreciated by all.
Shiori Sekine, Healthcare Assistant – nominated by Steph Ray, Healthcare Assistant
Shiori always shows up ready to do her best to help her colleagues and patients with a professional and friendly attitude. She is willing to go the extra mile to make sure everything runs smoothly, regardless of the situation. Her most important priority is the wellbeing of the patients and making sure they get the best possible care they need. Her awareness and attention to detail is to be admired. She is always friendly and lovely to work with, a true team player.
Pinali Mandalia, People Advice Coordinator – nominated by Olga Vearncombe, People Advice Manager
I want to recognise Pinali for her incredible initiative and dedication to the improvements in the People Team. Pinali took the time to document key administrative processes, ensuring clarity and efficiency for the rest of the team. On top of that, she reviewed and suggested meaningful improvements to the visa process, demonstrating both foresight and a commitment to continuous improvement. Her proactive approach didn’t stop there— she also created her own resources to support the redeployment process, showing a real sense of ownership and a drive to make things better for our staff members. Thank you, Pinali, for your initiative, problem-solving, and teamwork; your contributions have made a great impact. Thank you for going above and beyond!
Mandy How, Respiratory Admin – nominated by Jason Viner, Clinical Manager
Mandy is a fantastic coordinator. She is relatively new to this post and has risen to a high standard in a short period of time due to hard work and a fast learning curve. She works really hard to coordinate all of the patients appointments. Respiratory Physiology have been a pilot site for the digital appointment letters system and through their hard work we now are achieving 96% of all our letters being sent digitally, this success has been achieved due to their continuing dedication to NBT. She demonstrates caring by always listening to the patients and arranging the appointments with patients in mind. They are really good at supporting the Respiratory Physiology service and she makes the Clinicians roles easier to perform due to her administrative excellence. She is respectful and helps all patients achieve the appointments they require.
Dave Jordan, Volunteer - nominated by Marie-Emilie Magnac, Clinical Supervisor
Dave selfless dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to NBT have made a profound impact on our team and the hospital. Throughout his time as a volunteer, Dave has gone above and beyond to support both healthcare staff and the public during critical vaccination efforts. Whether assisting with administrative tasks, guiding patients with kindness or supporting overwhelmed healthcare workers, Dave has been an indispensable part of the team.
Charlotte Orr, Frailty Occupational Therapist – nominated by Lucy Dale, Frailty Occupational Therapist
Charlotte has been an exceptional support for all of the team. I would like to nominate her for her ideas around frailty teaching sessions to the wider hospital teams and her amazing tech skills! She is a great team player and is always willing to help others. She has been a great support to continue the dementia simulation training for new staff and coming up with new ideas to keep it exciting. Charlotte is very articulate when educating students and new staff members about frailty and is extremely hard working. Her kind and caring approach with patients never goes unnoticed.
Ruby Stanyer, Senior Pharmacy Assistant – nominated by Martina Sanclemente Heale, Deputy Supply Services Lead
I want to nominate Ruby in recognition of for her constant hard work and dedication. Her positive attitude is widely recognised, not only within our team but also external staff. Ruby brings infectious enthusiasm to every task making collaboration both productive and enjoyable. She is supportive and uplifts the team mood, enhancing team morale and productivity. Lili has always been passionate about her job and it shows within her work. She works twice as hard as any other and always one step ahead. Lili is kind and compassionate towards her patients. Despite the short staff levels, Lili works hard to make sure everything runs smoothly. She is going to make an amazing AP and hopefully an even better nurse in the future.
Harriet Tutt, Scrub Nurse – nominated by Jordan Griffin, Team Leader
Since Harriet has started, she has shown a huge amount of professionalism and leadership that surpasses her level of experience. Harriet is a valuable asset to theatres and the wider NBT organisation. Thanks for all your hard work!
