Developing a psychologically safe, restorative Just Culture for staff at NBT: a model of true engagement and partnership working’ in the Staff Engagement category
Through partnership working across People (HR) , Patient Safety and trade unions we are have developed, and are continuing to develop, different ways of thinking and learning, with a cultural shift impacting everyone. Our goal of building psychological safety for staff is supported by key ‘enablers’, including:
- Applying a restorative just culture approach to People issues
- How we respond when a patient safety incident occurs, through a systematic and psychologically safe approach to understanding and learning.
- Our early resolution processes
- Our People policies
While we are still early on in our journey and are learning together, deep and meaningful staff engagement has been essential to the success of these enablers to date and to our overall goal of a restorative, just and psychologically safe culture.
Nick Preston, Clinical Digital Lead – EPR Theatres Workstream for the Clinical Leader of the Year category
NBT’s digital transformation strategy is driven by the creation of a new electronic patient record. The first major milestone towards achieving this was launching the Bluespier Scheduling System with Theatres staff. This introduced a better-integrated solution, designed to help them work together more efficiently to deliver patient care.
Nick Preston, as Project Clinical Digital Lead, was critical to Bluespier’s successful launch. Clinical Digital Leads act as a crucial 'bridge' between IT transformation teams and clinicians and, in this respect, Nick - and his particular leadership style - was pivotal to ensuring the partnership was a successful one.
Congratulations also to our colleagues in BNSSG who have been shortlisted for the NHS Race Equality Award, for maximising Covid-19 vaccination uptake in a diverse population.
Congratulations to Nick and everyone involved in the hard work behind these awards.
