The Commitment to our Community programme is supporting local residents in our most challenged communities across Bristol experiencing barriers to work. Tyron D’Mello, an Outpatient Receptionist, shares his journey on starting his career in Healthcare at North Bristol NHS Trust.
I am incredibly grateful to say I’m now part of the NHS!
Growing up in Dubai and having lived in Bristol for four years now, I have worked in TV Production and hospitality. I always knew I wanted a career that made a meaningful impact.
The NHS, being one of the most respected healthcare systems in the world, had always been my dream. But I always felt like I didn’t know what role I could do or how to apply. That changed when I discovered the Commitment to Our Community programme. It didn’t just open doors for me; it showed me that what I’d thought was impossible was achievable with the right support and guidance.
How the Commitment to Our Community programme supported me
From day one, I had an incredible support system in Dre Williams (Community Engagement Officer). I was guided through every step, from initially joining, through the application and interview process to then getting my job role.
Transport was one of my biggest challenges. Getting to work felt overwhelming, but Dre went above and beyond to help. With his assistance, I was able to secure a £150 discount on a bicycle, and I am now enjoying my bike ride to work along the streets of Bristol. It’s these small yet significant gestures that has really made my experience of getting to work a whole lot better.
Figuring out what I want to do
Coming from a creative background in TV production and working in hospitality, I wasn’t sure how my skills would translate to healthcare. But I’ve always been a people person, and this programme helped me see how my ability to connect with others can really be a strength in my job role.
I have learned that being creative and empathetic can make a real difference in healthcare too, as building relationships and creating positive experiences for both patients and colleagues is an important part of a patient experience at hospital.
Be Resilient
If you’re someone who feels like your dream career is out of reach, let me tell you: it’s not. The Commitment to Our Community programme gave me the tools and confidence to pursue a career I once thought was impossible.
There were times when I was receiving job rejections, I told myself to keep going. I’d like to share this with you too, Be resilient and keep dreaming to achieve your goals!
