Dr Jo Crofts is a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.  She qualified in 2000 from the University of Nottingham.

Jo has a special interest in caring for women who require complex care during childbirth, managing couples who suffer from recurrent miscarriage and leading research into making childbirth safer.  Jo leads the Maternity Critical Care Unit at Southmead Hospital and is an internationally recognised expert on the management and teaching of childbirth emergencies. 

Jo was awarded a Medical Doctorate (University of Bristol, 2009) for her research into staff training to ensure all women and their babies have the best possible pregnancy outcomes.  Jo is the lead author for the International RCOG Shoulder Dystocia Guideline and helped to develop the PROMPT Birth Trainer, a training mannequin designed to help midwives and doctors improve their management of childbirth emergencies.

Jo is a founder member of the PROMPT Maternity Foundation, a registered Charity that helps to make childbirth safer through the dissemination of multi-professional obstetric emergency training.  PROMPT training, which originated in Southmead Hospital in 2000, is now run in over 12 different countries – helping to make childbirth safer from Australia to Zimbabwe.

Jo leads a Health Partnership between Southmead Hospital and Mpilo Central Hospital, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and has Postgraduate Certificates in Global Health Policy and Medical Education.

Mr Thomas Chapman was born and raised In Worcestershire and attended Bristol University. He extended medical training with an additional science degree obtaining first class honours and winning a scholarship from the Smith and Nephew foundation with national recognition. He trained in all general aspects of surgery in the Southwest UK for 6 years before specialising in Plastic Surgery from 2004. Mr Chapman completed the FRCS(Plast) in 2009 and finished specialist training (CCT) in 2010. He had additional training in the form of competitive fellowships in Nottingham, Bristol, London and Trieste (Italy) to study a variety of reconstructive techniques before becoming a full time NHS consultant in 2012. He has won awards from the Royal College of Surgeons and British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons, and is fellows of both. 

Mr Thomas Chapman is a member of the governing body of Bristol University, and is involved in the selection of medical students and design of the medical curriculum. He is also involved in the national selection of trainees in plastic surgery and is responsible for their progress in training in the Southwest UK.

He has over 30 publications and has contributed as an author and editor to medical texts and national guidance for surgeons. He supervises and coordinates a number of ongoing research projects. He has presented at international meetings and is an invited speaker on training courses and conferences. He is a core member of the skin cancer and sarcoma multidisciplinary team meetings. With Paul Wilson, he runs the Bristol sarcoma service and with Umraz Khan runs the orthoplastic service for lower limb trauma.

North Bristol NHS Trust Vascular Surgery delivers all aspects of arterial and venous care. Bristol Royal Infirmary and Royal United Hospital, Bath have a vascular service provided by the network.
You will still see your consultant for an outpatient appointment, have most investigations (CT and MRI scans) and your follow-up care and nurse-led clinics locally. There are outpatient clinics at:

  • Southmead Hospital
  • Bristol Royal Infirmary
  • Royal United Hospitals Bath
  • Weston General Hospital
  • Cossham Community Hospital
  • Melksham Community Hospital.

As well as vascular surgery, there are other services the network provides including:

  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme
  • Complex endovascular service for the South West
  • Support for stroke services, diabetic foot services, major trauma and cardiac surgery/cardiology
  • Thoracic aortic service delivered with Bristol Heart Institute
