Renal (Kidney)

The Renal (kidney medicine, or nephrology) Service at Southmead Hospital Bristol, is part of North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT), is the largest of its kind in the South West of England. 

We look after patients with kidney diseases, both as inpatients and outpatients. We help patients prepare for and receive treatments for kidney failure, including kidney transplants, dialysis, and conservative care for kidney failure. 

Our unit performs kidney transplants for over 120 people each year, for patients looked after by our service, as well as for patients with kidney failure from the Exeter, Dorset, and Gloucester renal centres. 

We have an established programme of living donor transplantation. 

More than 430 patients receive haemodialysis (blood dialysis) at Southmead hospital or one of our satellite units in Bath, Cossham, Weston-super-Mare, Southmead, South Bristol, Taunton and Frome.  Many of our patients receive dialysis at home.
