Condition / Indication: The digestion of cross linked fibrin by plasmin gives rises to fibrin degradation products such as D-dimers. D-dimers are raised in a number of conditions, however, they are typically used to exclude DVT/PE.
Special precautions & notes: Cannot use underfilled, overfilled, clotted , contaminated or samples aged (>24 hours). Poorly taken blood sample leading to sample activation.
Reference range: Note new reference range from 24/04/23: Less than 500 ug/L (Below 50 years of age). Age related adjustment is made for patients >50 years of age.
