Sample type: Whole Blood
Test name: Platelet count (EDTA & Citrate)
Condition / Indication: Part of a full blood count (FBC). In the presence of platelet clumps due to EDTA, a more accurate platelet count may be obtained from the Sodium citrate (blue top) tube as it may resolve the clumping.
Special precautions & notes: Clotted or underfilled samples cannot be used. Cannot be used if centrifuged. Citrated platelet count can be requested via ICE (Test Code: CPC). In rare case antibodies may be developed against both the EDTA and citrate anticoagulant and accurate platelet count cannot be obtained. A blood film is performed to determine if the platelet count is normal or reduced.
