Sample type: Whole Blood
Test name: Protein S
Condition / Indication: Included in Thrombophilia Screen. Free Protein S acts as cofactor for activated Protein C and in the presence of calcium this complex binds strongly to phospholipid surfaces, thus enhancing Protein Cās action in degrading FVa and FVIIIa.
Reduction in protein S levels decreases anticoagulant potential in the body and therefore increases the risk of thromboembolism: DVT/PE. As a result patients may develop recurring thrombotic episodes.
Special precautions & notes: Sample should be filled to the indicated mark on blood bottle. Any underfilled samples must be rejected. Over filled samples have the potential to generate false results due to poor mixing and should be rejected.
