Sample type: Serum
Test name: Troponin I a.k.a. TnI
Condition / Indication: Myocardial Infarction (MI) / Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS)
Special precautions & notes: The Troponin I assay is susceptible to positive interference from fibrin deposits or clots causing a falsely high result. This is more likely to occur when a small sample volume is sent. Please ensure full tubes of blood are taken and send a prompt repeat if the Troponin I result does not fit with the clinical picture. Note serum SST and Li heparin tubes should not be used interchangably.
Reference range: The 99th centile of the normal population reference range for Troponin I is 18ng/L but interpretation is only possible in the context of the clinical presentation and ECG findings. A single Troponin I below 18ng/L at presentation does not exclude acute coronary syndrome. See acute coronary syndrome pathway for more details.
