Pain Clinic Services

The Pain Clinic at Southmead Hospital is a nationally recognised centre of excellence for pain management. We focus on reducing suffering experienced by a person with chronic pain by developing physical, emotional, intellectual, and social skills to help an individual regain control of his/her life and enhance the quality and pleasure of that life, despite the pain.

Pain can affect just about every aspect of people's lives. It can affect:

  • the way people move
  • how much they do
  • how far they go
  • how able they are to take part in activities
  • how confident and optimistic they feel.
  • relationships with others
  • how well they sleep or concentrate
  • how much they enjoy life.

As time goes on the effects of pain become more complicated.

Pain management aims to explain and reduce these effects by giving people information and helping them develop coping skills that improve their ability to manage pain. Pain management is not trying to cure pain, although some people say their pain has reduced afterwards.

Pain Service Aims

We want to improve the quality of lives of our patients by controlling, reducing and where possible, curing their pain.

Accessing Pain Clinic

Pain clinic can be accessed by a referral from your GP, physiotherapist, local Musculoskeletal Assessment & Treatment Service and spinal surgery services.

Your Pain Clinic Appointment

You have been referred to the pain service because your pain is interfering with your quality of life and your ability to function effectively.
